Navotas Landfill Fire Linked to Incomplete Closure Program
A fire at the Navotas City landfill could have been avoided if the operator had completed the closure program. The incident emphasizes the risks associated with improper waste management, particularly in high-temperature conditions.

A fire ignited at the Navotas City sanitary landfill on Friday at 7:56 p.m. and continued into Saturday. The blaze was linked to an incomplete closure process after the landfill ceased operations in August 2025.
The operator left significant amounts of waste unsecured, contributing to the risk of fire in hot weather. Firefighting efforts included aerial water drops from the Philippine Air Force and ground operations, which faced logistical challenges due to the landfill's location.
Local health officials provided face masks and monitored air quality for affected residents. Ongoing firefighting operations aim to control the situation, with sand used to limit oxygen access.
