Navy Contractor Learjet Fire Preceded Fatal California Crash
A Navy contractor Learjet crashed off California's coast on May 10, killing three civilians onboard. Investigators report the aircraft caught fire before attempting an emergency landing.

On May 10, a Gates Learjet 36A, contracted by the Navy, crashed into the Pacific Ocean near San Clemente Island, resulting in three presumed fatalities. The aircraft was attempting an emergency landing at a Navy airfield after crew members reported smoke and a burning odor in the cabin.
The Learjet, along with a second aircraft from Point Mugu Naval Air Station, was en route to Navy training exercises when it encountered distress. Preliminary findings indicate the jet had descended to 1,338 feet shortly before losing contact. The wreckage, found a mile offshore at a depth of 300 feet, showed signs of fire prior to the incident, raising concerns over safety protocols for contractor operations.
