Navy Implements Innovative Rust Removal Techniques at Norfolk Naval Station
Navy ships at Norfolk Naval Station are undergoing advanced rust removal techniques to reduce maintenance time. The initiative aims to enhance ship durability and operational efficiency, addressing corrosion issues faced during deployments.

The Navy is adopting new rust removal methods at Norfolk Naval Station to expedite ship maintenance and improve operational readiness. Two companies, Best-Tec and Atmospheric Plasma Solutions Inc., are utilizing laser and plasma blast systems for corrosion control.
Best-Tec's approach involves lasers and induction units for lead paint removal, while Atmospheric Plasma Solutions offers a portable plasma blast system for targeted rust abatement. This initiative will train sailors in rust removal, aiming to decrease shipyard time and enhance the appearance of vessels returning from lengthy deployments. The impact of these advancements may lead to improved fleet longevity and operational capabilities.
