Navy to Upgrade MEKO-Class Frigates with €390 Million Modernization Program
The Defense Ministry is initiating a modernization program for the Navy's four MEKO-class frigates, extending their operational lifespan by 15 years. Two of the core programs are pending approval from the General Directorate of Defense Armaments and Investments.
The modernization, valued at approximately €390 million, will enhance combat capability and survivability, with the first stage costing around €200 million focused on new electronic systems and integration with the Tacticos combat management system. Thales Netherlands will supply sensors and electronics, while SSMART will manage integration.
A third program concerning cooperation with Skaramangas shipyards is expected for submission soon. Future phases will include communications upgrades, weapons interventions, and the installation of the anti-drone system Kentavros. Following necessary approvals, the first upgraded frigate is anticipated for delivery by late 2028, with all upgrades completed by 2030.
