Nechirvan Barzani Advocates for Stronger Erbil-Baghdad Cooperation
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani presents a roadmap for enhanced relations with Baghdad, emphasizing shared security and national unity. This approach seeks to reinforce the Peshmerga's role in Iraq's defense and promote regional stability amid geopolitical tensions.

On June 21, 2026, Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, articulated a strategy for strengthening ties with Baghdad during a military graduation in Sulaymaniah. He highlighted the importance of the Peshmerga's recognition within Iraq's national defense and called on the federal government to fulfill its constitutional obligations regarding funding and armament.
Barzani also emphasized the need for a professional and apolitical Peshmerga force to safeguard the Kurdistan Region's constitutional status. Notably, he acknowledged the historical significance of the Qachaghulan Military College and the contributions of Jalal Talabani.
The President stressed the importance of internal Kurdish unity and the region's role in de-escalating geopolitical tensions, advocating for peace and economic development across Iraq. This cooperative stance may enhance stability in the region but also presents risks of entanglement in broader geopolitical conflicts.
