Nepal Seeks Heavy-Lift Aircraft Instead of US Helicopters
Nepal is requesting heavy-lift aircraft from the US rather than the six helicopters offered under the Foreign Military Financing program. This shift in demand highlights Nepal's focus on construction needs in remote areas, prioritizing aerial cranes for material transport over rotary-wing aircraft for other uses.

Nepal's government is pursuing a counter-proposal to the US regarding military assistance, specifically requesting heavy-lift aircraft instead of the six helicopters initially offered. This decision follows US Deputy Secretary of State Richard R Verma's announcement of a $100 million fund in August 2024, aimed at enhancing Nepal's rotary-wing capabilities.
The Nepali authorities, including the Ministry of Defence and Army, have articulated a need for aircraft capable of transporting construction materials, citing high maintenance and operational costs related to helicopters. The proposal for helicopters is in addition to prior US support, which includes five helicopters and two M28 Skytrucks. Nepal's strategy appears aimed at balancing relations with major powers while addressing specific domestic needs.
