Netherlands Coalition Blocks Waddenzee Gas Drilling, Allocates €14 Billion for Nuclear Power Development
The Netherlands' coalition government has decided to block new gas drilling permits in the Waddenzee while continuing offshore gas production in the Noordzee and maintaining the closure of the Groningen gas field. The coalition's agreement allocates €14 billion from the Climate Fund for nuclear power development, including the construction of new plants and extending the operation of the Borssele plant, while also emphasizing investment in local energy sources like wind power and green gas.

The Netherlands' coalition government will halt new permits for gas drilling beneath the Waddenzee, continue offshore gas production in the Noordzee, and maintain the closure of the Groningen gas field. The coalition agreement includes a commitment to responsibly phase out onshore gas extraction.
Additionally, over 14 billion euros from the Climate Fund is designated for constructing nuclear power plants, which will also cover preparatory costs and extend the operation of the existing Borssele nuclear plant. The coalition emphasizes investment in local energy sources, including wind power and green gas, without allocating further funding for climate policy or nuclear energy beyond the specified amounts.
