Netherlands Coalition D66, VVD, CDA Unveils Defense and Social Reforms with Billions in Investments

DEFENSE

The coalition of D66, VVD, and CDA has announced plans for significant defense investments and social reforms, including a legally binding NATO defense spending target of 3.5% of GDP. Citizens will contribute 3.4 billion euros and businesses 1.7 billion euros to national security through a new 'freedom contribution' starting in 2028.

Ukraine will receive 3 billion euros in military aid and over 400 million euros in additional support from 2027 to 2029. The coalition aims to save 1 billion euros annually from 2029 by modernizing the civil service and cutting expenditures proportionally across ministries.

Lelystad Airport is set to open, pending environmental permits. The healthcare deductible will remain unchanged, saving the state about 4 billion euros annually, with a planned increase in 2027. A 'sugar tax' is proposed for 2030, potentially raising nearly 1 billion euros. Additionally, the state pension age will rise more rapidly from 2033, saving the government over 2.5 billion euros annually.
