Netherlands to Equip New Orka-Class Submarines with F21 Mk 2 Torpedoes
The Royal Netherlands Navy will equip its new Orka-class submarines with Naval Group's F21 Mk 2 heavyweight torpedo, replacing the planned MK 48 Mod 7AT. This decision, announced by the Ministry of Defence on March 3, aims to introduce the next-generation torpedo sooner. The Netherlands has a contract with Naval Group for four Orka-class submarines, with delivery starting in 2033.

The Royal Netherlands Navy's new Orka-class diesel-electric submarines will be equipped with Naval Group's F21 Mk 2 heavyweight torpedo, reversing a prior plan to use the US-supplied MK 48 Mod 7AT. The Netherlands' Ministry of Defence announced this decision on March 3, aiming for an earlier introduction of the new-generation torpedo.
The existing Walrus-class submarines currently use the MK 48 Mod 7AT. In September 2024, the Netherlands MoD awarded a EUR5.6 billion contract to Naval Group for four Orka-class submarines, with the first expected in 2033.
