Netherlands' Zandmotor Project Utilizes Sand Redistribution for Coastal Defense
Initiated in 2011, the Zandmotor project involves a single deposit of 21.5 million cubic meters of sand to combat coastal erosion. This innovative approach allows natural processes to redistribute sand over two decades, reducing the need for frequent interventions.

The Zandmotor project, launched in 2011, involved the deposition of 21.5 million cubic meters of sand along the South Holland coast, specifically between Ter Heijde and Kijkduin. Instead of traditional beach nourishment methods, this initiative allows natural forces to redistribute the sand over approximately 20 years.
A ten-year evaluation in 2021 confirmed that the peninsula's width expanded from 2 kilometers to 5 kilometers, with around 60% of the sand moving to adjacent beaches and dunes. The project's total cost was approximately €70 million, with ongoing monitoring conducted by Deltares and Wageningen University. While the Zandmotor has succeeded in its ecological objectives and become a recreational area, its findings may not be universally applicable to other coastlines with different environmental conditions.
