New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt Seeks Alternative Site for Natural Gas Power Plant in Tantramar

NATURAL GAS

New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt is exploring alternative locations for a natural gas power plant planned for Tantramar due to community resistance. The proposed site is intended to generate 400 megawatts for N.B.

Power, but Holt acknowledged the need for community acceptance. N.B. Power faces a tight timeline, with hearings scheduled for February and a decision required by April to avoid project delays involving the U.S. company ProEnergy.

A forecast indicates a potential electricity shortfall by 2028, with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation reporting insufficient reserve margins for the Maritime region. Holt emphasizes the importance of addressing local opposition and ensuring the project is safe and responsible, while balancing the urgency of meeting electricity demands.

She plans to act on recommendations regarding N.B. Power early in 2026 but has not committed to a cabinet shuffle.
