New Eco Homes Developed on Former Dairy Farm in Kent and East Sussex
A new residential development, The Barns, has been established on a former dairy farm in Kent and East Sussex, featuring nine eco-friendly homes clad in charred larch. Ranging from three to six bedrooms, the homes incorporate sustainable materials and technologies, such as air-source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels, while preserving the structural frames of existing farm buildings. The project aims to blend luxury living with environmental sustainability, addressing future water management needs.

A new residential development, The Barns, features nine homes on a former dairy farm straddling Kent and East Sussex. The homes, clad in charred larch, range from three to six bedrooms, with the largest measuring 6,500ft.
The site, located within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, encompasses 37 acres near Hartfield and Cowden. Retaining the structural frames of existing farm buildings, the design incorporates elements such as curved roofs reminiscent of Dutch barns.
Nissen Richards Studio enhanced the buildings with sustainable materials including black zinc roofing and extensive insulation. The houses utilize structural insulated panels, air-source heat pumps, and photovoltaic panels.
While meeting the Climate Challenge 2025 potable water target, the project highlighted the need for rainwater harvesting to meet future goals. The development aims to merge luxury living with eco-friendly practices.
