New Fortress Seeks Emergency Permit for LNG Terminal Expansion in San Juan
New Fortress has applied for an emergency permit to dredge the San Juan LNG terminal, aiming to accommodate larger vessels. This request follows years of operations without full regulatory compliance, raising safety and environmental concerns amid a lack of comprehensive oversight.

New Fortress has submitted an emergency permit request to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to dredge its LNG terminal in San Juan, increasing water depth from 32 to 43 feet. The expansion would allow the terminal to accommodate LNG carriers up to 174,000 cubic meters, significantly exceeding previously stated limits and raising safety concerns for nearby densely populated communities.
This project has been criticized for its regulatory circumvention, as the terminal was built without prior FERC authorization. The rapid timeline for public comment on the dredging proposal, set for just two weeks, reflects accelerated permitting processes under national energy emergency directives. This situation highlights potential risks associated with increased LNG volumes in a vulnerable area.
