New Left Proposes Reducing Greece's Defense Spending to 2% Amidst Budget Criticism

Alexis Charitsis, president of New Left, criticized the Greek government's state budget as a 'war budget' during a parliamentary session. He proposed reducing defense spending to 2% and accused the Mitsotakis government of undermining public trust in institutions like the Judiciary and Parliament.

Charitsis highlighted concerns over Greece's low investment share of GDP, noting that it is the second lowest in the EU, with current investments largely reliant on the Recovery and Resilience Fund, which will end in one year. He warned of a potential investment collapse after 2026, projecting a decrease from 10.2% in 2026 to 0.9% in 2028 and 0.8% in 2029.
