New Leo Kerner Bridge Construction to Restore Barataria-Lafitte Connection by April 2027
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is overseeing the construction of the new Leo Kerner Bridge, set to complete by mid-April 2027. This bridge will restore critical transportation between Barataria and Lafitte, damaged by Hurricane Ida. The $55 million project funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will include roadway improvements along LA 45 at a cost of $7.9 million. The bridge will feature a moveable swing design and enhance access for both vehicles and marine navigation.

The new Leo Kerner Bridge project in Jefferson Parish aims to reconnect Barataria and Lafitte, damaged by Hurricane Ida. The project, led by the Louisiana DOTD, is federally funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, with Louisiana receiving approximately $1 billion over five years.
The construction includes a new moveable swing bridge and roadway upgrades along LA 45, with completion expected by April 2027. Major elements of the project include a 20-foot vertical clearance and a natural gas-powered generator.
Phase two involves raising road sections for improved reliability during high water. Both phases are intended to be completed simultaneously, resuming marine traffic in the Barataria Waterway upon project completion.
