New UK Nationalisation Powers Impact Dalzell Plate Mill's Future
The UK’s Steel Industry (Nationalisation) Bill presents new options for the struggling Dalzell plate mill in Scotland. As the mill faces financial challenges and ownership issues, the legislation may help stabilize its operations and secure its role in the regional economy.

The Steel Industry (Nationalisation) Bill enables the UK government to take control of steel firms when public interest is at stake, potentially impacting Dalzell, Scotland's only plate mill. Owned by GFG Alliance's Liberty Steel, Dalzell restarted operations in December 2025 after a period of inactivity but has struggled with cash-flow issues, processing only 1,000 tonnes during an early trial run in November 2025.
The mill holds vital contracts, including a significant order from the UK government and Spanish shipbuilder Navantia, but its future depends on resolving ownership and financial challenges. Intervention from the UK government could stabilize operations, as the plant's survival is critical for sectors like shipbuilding and defense.
