New York Approves AI Data Centers and NESE Pipeline Amid Environmental Concerns
New York is advancing multiple AI data center projects that will significantly increase power consumption, projected to reach over 7,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030. Of the 25 new projects in the power grid interconnection queue, more than half are data centers, driven mainly by cryptocurrency mining and AI.
The NESE pipeline, recently approved, will transport natural gas from Pennsylvania to New York, adding to greenhouse gas emissions by 12%. Local opposition is evident, with environmental groups highlighting issues such as water contamination and noise pollution from facilities like the Greenidge Generation data center.
The state faces rising electricity costs, reportedly up 267% in five years, as it balances energy needs with environmental regulations. The Brookhaven National Laboratory is also considering building an AI data center on its campus, requiring a new gas-powered plant. The impact of these developments on local communities and ecosystems remains contentious.
