NGOs Challenge EU Taxonomy on Fossil Fuel Aircraft and Vessels
On February 24, a coalition of NGOs, including Opportunity Green, will challenge the European Commission's decision to classify fossil fuel-powered aircraft and ships as 'sustainable investments' under the EU Taxonomy. This follows the Commission's refusal to review the criteria after a request by the NGOs in early 2024. The current criteria permit LNG vessels and conventional fossil-fuel aircraft to be labeled sustainable, risking long-term fossil fuel use. The ruling, expected in 9-11 months, could compel the Commission to revise these criteria.

A coalition of NGOs, including Opportunity Green, is set to challenge the European Commission at the EU General Court on February 24 regarding the classification of fossil fuel-powered planes and ships as 'sustainable investments' under the EU Taxonomy. The Commission declined to review its criteria after a formal request from the NGOs in early 2024.
Current regulations allow LNG vessels and conventional fossil-fuel aircraft to qualify as sustainable, potentially locking in fossil fuel use for 25-30 years. This challenge is part of broader concerns about the credibility of the EU's green finance classification system. A court judgment may take 9-11 months, and a favorable ruling for the NGOs could lead to a review of the criteria.
