NGOs Urge Financial Institutions to Withdraw Support from Mozambique LNG Project Amid Human Rights Concerns
The Mozambican government and TotalEnergies announced the relaunch of the Mozambique LNG project after nearly five years of suspension. NGOs, including Justica Ambiental, Friends of the Earth France, Reclaim Finance, and BankTrack, criticized the decision, citing serious human rights concerns, particularly allegations of war crimes by Mozambican armed forces against civilians at the project site.
The United Kingdom and the Netherlands have withdrawn their support due to these risks. TotalEnergies faces allegations of human rights violations and is under investigation in France for involuntary manslaughter related to the 2021 Palma attacks. Nearly 30 financial institutions had previously agreed to fund the project in 2020 but are now urged to reconsider their involvement.
