NGT Addresses Vedanta's Red Mud Pond Breach in Odisha, Seeks Accountability
The National Green Tribunal has accepted a complaint regarding environmental violations by Vedanta Limited in Lanjigarh, Odisha, following a significant breach in its red mud pond in September 2024. The breach discharged approximately 400,000 cubic meters of toxic wastewater into agricultural areas and the Bansadhara River. No environmental compensation has been imposed despite prior directives. The Tribunal has issued notices to various authorities, with further hearings scheduled for May 15.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has acknowledged a complaint against Vedanta Limited concerning environmental violations at its alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha, due to a breach in its red mud pond on September 15, 2024. This incident involved the uncontrolled release of about 400,000 cubic meters of highly alkaline wastewater, contaminating 20 to 30 acres of land and affecting the Bansadhara River.
The Odisha State Pollution Control Board's findings indicate severe structural damage at the site. The NGT has notified relevant authorities, including the Government of Odisha and pollution control bodies, with a follow-up hearing set for May 15.
