Niedersachsen Becomes Key LNG Hub Amid Rising Dependence on US Gas
Wilhelmshaven, Niedersachsen has become a central LNG hub, with 85 tankers docking from the US between May 2024 and December 2025. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is driving gas prices up and highlighting Germany's energy supply vulnerabilities. In 2023, LNG accounted for 7.2% of German gas imports, rising to over 10% in 2025. The Niedersachsen government expresses concerns over reliance on US LNG, urging a shift towards renewable energy sources to ensure energy independence.

Niedersachsen has emerged as a key LNG hub, with Wilhelmshaven hosting two-thirds of Germany's operational terminals. Between May 2024 and December 2025, 85 LNG tankers primarily from the US have arrived.
The LNG share of German gas imports has risen from 7.2% in 2023 to over 10% in 2025, according to the Bundesnetzagentur. The ongoing Middle East conflict is increasing gas prices, reflecting Germany's vulnerability to geopolitical risks. Niedersachsen leaders are calling for energy independence through renewables to mitigate reliance on US LNG and the associated price volatility.
