Nigeria Enhances Maritime Security Using Technology and Regional Cooperation
The Nigerian Navy pursued the oil tanker MT Heroic Idun in August 2022, suspecting oil theft. The crew mistook the naval patrol for pirates and fled, leading to their arrest in Equatorial Guinea through the Yaoundé Architecture Regional Information System (YARIS).
While the crew was later acquitted, this incident underscores the use of technology for maritime domain awareness (MDA) in Africa. Nigeria employs systems like Falcon Eye and the Deep Blue Project, which includes 19 ships and UAVs, to monitor its waters and has seen a significant drop in piracy.
Regional systems like YARIS and the Djibouti Code of Conduct aim to enhance cooperation among nations to address maritime security challenges. Despite advancements, issues such as trust among shippers and long-term sustainability of these systems persist. Analysts emphasize the need for collaboration and resource allocation to improve maritime security across Africa's extensive coastlines.
