Nigeria Implements Net Billing Regulations for Solar Power Sales
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has launched the Net Billing Regulations 2026, allowing consumers with solar systems to sell excess power to distribution companies. This initiative aims to boost renewable energy adoption, attract private investments, and enhance electricity supply stability.

The Net Billing Regulations 2026 enable eligible electricity consumers to generate electricity for personal use and sell surplus to distribution companies. Customers must have solar systems with a capacity between 50 kW and 1.5 MW, transforming them into 'prosumers.'
The regulations facilitate the monetization of excess energy generated during peak sunlight hours and reduce reliance on the national grid. The initiative is expected to attract investments in renewable technologies, enhance energy security, and support greenhouse gas emission reductions. Compliance with technical standards and registration with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission is required for participation.
