Nigeria Imports N334.68bn Solar Panels in Q3 2025 Amid Push for Local Manufacturing

SOLAR ENERGY

In Q3 2025, Nigeria imported solar panels worth N334.68bn, down from N125.29bn in Q1 and N117.39bn in Q2, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The Federal Government aims to end photovoltaic solar panel imports, as stated by Abba Aliyu, CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), during a roundtable with the Lagos State Government.

They signed a Memorandum of Understanding for rural electrification and are working to domesticate the manufacturing of renewable equipment. A PV panel assembly plant in Ikotun, Lagos, has increased its capacity from 10 megawatts to an additional 100 megawatts.

The REA is also negotiating a joint development agreement with Green World for a lithium battery plant. Support for local solar panel manufacturing is emphasized, but concerns arise about the impact of import restrictions on the renewable energy sector's growth.
