Nigeria to Pilot Communal Ranching Initiative in Six States for Climate-Smart Livestock
Nigeria is set to launch a communal ranching initiative in six states to promote climate-smart livestock production, as announced by Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha. The initiative aims to improve feed systems and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with land allocation expected before the next rainy season. Supported by the ILRI-GATES Livestock Feed and Nutrition Project, it will focus on alternative protein sources and climate-resilient forages to enhance livestock productivity and food security.

The Nigerian Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, announced a communal ranching initiative in six states: Adamawa, Benue, Kaduna, Kano, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory. This initiative aims to promote climate-smart livestock production through improved feed systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Land allocation for ranches is expected before the next rainy season. The ILRI-GATES Livestock Feed and Nutrition Project will support this effort, focusing on alternative protein sources and climate-resilient forages to enhance livestock productivity and food security across Nigeria, Kenya, and Ethiopia. The project seeks to implement practical solutions to mitigate methane emissions and improve livestock feeding practices.
