Nigerian Senate Rejects Probe into Defence Spending Amid Security Concerns
The Nigerian Senate has declined a motion to investigate the armed forces' budget, which reached N5.4 trillion for 2026. Senate President Godswill Akpabio argues that such a probe would distract military efforts in tackling ongoing security challenges, despite increasing calls for accountability in defense spending.

In 2026, Nigeria's defense budget totals N5.4 trillion, representing nearly 10% of a N58 trillion overall budget. The Ministry of Defence receives N3.1 trillion, with the Army, Navy, and Air Force allocated N1.5 trillion, N443.9 billion, and N407 billion respectively.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole called for an investigation into defense spending, citing rising security issues despite increased funding. Akpabio emphasized that a public probe could undermine military morale and operational focus, advocating for closed-door engagements instead. Accountability concerns persist, as past resolutions for military transparency remain unaddressed, potentially exacerbating public distrust in military operations.
