Nigeria's 2026 Budget Proposes Increased Spending on Vehicles and Miscellaneous Items Amid Revenue Concerns

DEFENSE

The Nigerian Federal Government's 2026 budget proposal allocates N11.25 billion for presidential vehicles, a 135% increase from the previous year. The overall budget reflects a troubling trend of high expenditures on vehicles and miscellaneous items across various ministries, despite calls for fiscal discipline in light of uncertain revenue.

Notably, the Nigerian Army has earmarked N10.52 billion for miscellaneous expenses, while the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the State House Headquarters will spend N3.09 billion and N3.17 billion, respectively. Despite commitments to digital transformation, spending on stationery has increased, with significant rises proposed across multiple ministries.

The budget also continues to channel funds into high-cost luxury procurements, with N36 billion allocated for office rehabilitation and maintenance over three years. The solarization project for the Presidential Villa is budgeted at N7 billion, highlighting ongoing concerns about the prioritization of expenditures.
