Nigeria's Federal Government Allocates N75bn for Arms Amid Security Concerns
From 2023 to 2025, Nigeria's Federal Government spent approximately N75bn on military procurements, with a notable increase in 2024. The Ministry of Defence led the expenditures, indicating a concentrated effort to address escalating security challenges.

Between 2023 and 2025, Nigeria's Federal Government allocated about N74.96bn for arms and military equipment, with spending peaking at N40.84bn in 2024. The majority of expenditures were attributed to the Ministry of Defence, which recorded significant transactions, including N33.22bn in a single day for urgent operational equipment on July 26, 2024.
Other agencies, like the Nigeria Immigration Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, also increased their procurement activities, especially in 2024. In contrast, spending dropped sharply to N819.46m in 2025, largely influenced by lower procurement activity from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
The data suggests that actual security spending may be higher than reported, as it only reflects specific arms-related transactions. Analysts have expressed concern that limited access to modern weaponry could hinder African nations' responses to rising security threats.
