Nigeria's Oil Firms Flaring 203.9 Billion Scf of Gas in 2025 Despite High Utilization Rates
In 2025, Nigeria's oil and gas companies flared approximately 203.9 billion standard cubic feet (scf) of natural gas, despite gas utilization exceeding 92%. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) reported total gas production at around 2.71 trillion scf, consisting of 1.46 trillion scf of Associated Gas and 1.25 trillion scf of Non-Associated Gas.
Of this, roughly 2.50 trillion scf was utilized for field operations, domestic supply, and exports. The flaring rate represented 7.54% of total production, an increase from 192.9 billion scf in 2024. Monthly flaring fluctuated between 15 billion scf and 18 billion scf, with a peak in January at 18.7 billion scf. Associated Gas production, averaging over 120 billion scf per month, faced limitations due to infrastructure gaps, resulting in higher flaring risks compared to Non-Associated Gas.
