The Federal Government of Nigeria is committed to enhancing the country's steel sector for sustainable development, as stated by Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, in his New Year message on January 1, 2026, in Abuja. The ministry aims to strengthen institutional frameworks, promote local steel production, and attract investments while enhancing human capacity.

In 2025, despite budget constraints, the ministry made progress through strategic partnerships and hosted the inaugural National Steel Summit. Notably, Nigeria is in discussions with Chinese investors to revive the Ajaokuta steel plant and facilitated a $500 million investment for five mini-LNG plants in the Ajaokuta Steel Territory to ensure power supply and reduce costs. Plans for 2026 include measurable production outcomes, deeper local content integration, and sustainable job creation.
