Niti Aayog Rejects Request from Tata, M&M, JSW MG on Zero Emission Vehicles Definition
Niti Aayog has declined requests from Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and JSW MG Motor to define zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) as solely electric, emphasizing the importance of including biofuels and hybrids. The think tank plans a phased transition strategy prioritizing lower-emission technologies, with biofuels playing a significant role in achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Niti Aayog has rejected requests from Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and JSW MG Motor to classify electric vehicles as zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) exclusively. The agency advocates for a broader definition that includes biofuels and hybrids.
It suggests a phased transition strategy beginning with the elimination of diesel vehicles and the adoption of lower-emission technologies, progressing to biofuels and full deployment of ZEVs. The Indian Federation of Green Energy commended Niti Aayog for maintaining a biofuel-focused decarbonization approach and clarifying that ZEVs' definition considers lifecycle emissions.
