NOIA Calls for End to Offshore Wind Project Pause Amid National Security Concerns

DEFENSEWIND ENERGY

The National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) urged the U.S. administration to lift the suspension on five large-scale offshore wind projects, citing completed national security reviews and risks to jobs and U.S. energy competitiveness. NOIA President Erik Milito emphasized that all projects under construction had undergone Department of Defense scrutiny without objections.

The Department of the Interior, however, stated that the pause is necessary to address concerns about potential radar interference from turbine blades and towers. This suspension affects projects including Orsted's Revolution Wind, Sunrise Wind, and Equinor's Empire Wind 1.

Dominion Energy warned that the suspension threatens grid reliability for military and vital infrastructure. NOIA reiterated that the offshore wind sector is essential for U.S. energy goals and competitiveness, particularly against countries like China.
