North Korea Advances Naval Nuclear Capabilities Ahead of Xi Jinping's Visit
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un emphasized enhancing naval capabilities to support nuclear deterrence. The focus includes developing destroyers and underwater weapons as part of a new five-year defense plan.

Kim Jong Un has reiterated the importance of strengthening North Korea's naval forces to enhance nuclear deterrence. During a visit to the destroyer Kang Kon, Kim outlined a new five-year defense strategy that focuses on the construction of larger destroyers and the development of advanced underwater weapons.
The Kang Kon destroyer, which was relaunched after repairs in June 2022, is intended to deliver a 'deadly blow' to enemies above and below the water. This initiative aligns with Kim's broader military goals, particularly in the context of increased ties with Russia and the upcoming visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 8-9. The potential implications of these developments may exacerbate regional tensions and alter security dynamics in East Asia.
