North Korea Claims South Korean Drone Incursion, Challenging Lee Jae Myung's Peace Efforts

DEFENSE

North Korea has claimed to have shot down South Korean drones near Kaesong, complicating South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's peace initiatives. On January 10, North Korea stated that South Korean unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) infiltrated its airspace on two occasions, in September 2025 and January 4, 2026.

In response, Lee convened an emergency meeting and ordered a joint military-police investigation, denying any drone flights over North Korea. The suspects, identified as Jang and Oh, claimed the drones were used for environmental monitoring.

The incident has raised concerns about South Korea's air defenses, with Lee questioning military preparedness. The ongoing trial of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, accused of using drones in a martial law attempt, has further complicated the situation. North Korea's narrative aims to reinforce its portrayal of South Korea as hostile while deflecting attention from its own military actions.
