North Yorkshire Council has been revalidated for the Gold Award status under the Ministry of Defence's Employer Recognition Scheme, recognizing its support for the Armed Forces community. The award, valid for five years, acknowledges initiatives like workplace flexibility for reservists and community outreach.

The council has also supported local cadet units and organized events such as Armed Forces Day. Councillors provided funding to Thirsk Army Cadets for equipment. The council signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2011 and reaffirmed its commitment in 2021 and 2023, with nearly 30,000 veterans residing in the area.
