Northeastern Student Enhances Underwater Robotics with Orpheus AUV
A co-op at Orpheus Ocean allowed Shalini Agrawal to develop software for the Orpheus AUV, enhancing its imaging capabilities. This partnership highlights the growing demand for cost-effective underwater robotics solutions in deep-sea exploration.

Shalini Agrawal, a robotics student at Northeastern University, developed software for the Orpheus AUV, which can reach depths of 6,000 meters (3.7 miles). The AUV is designed for applications like material collection and deep-sea monitoring, and aims to provide affordable underwater robotics services.
Agrawal's contributions included reverse-engineering the camera system to integrate it with the AUV's autonomy system, enabling effective operation in unstructured environments. Testing conducted off Cape Cod showed successful functionality over four days, with minor issues quickly resolved. Agrawal's experience has pivoted her career focus from medical to field robotics, particularly in underwater applications, reflecting the industry's growth.
