Northrop Grumman Launches Enhanced ICBM Target Vehicle for Missile Defense Testing
Northrop Grumman Corporation has successfully launched its redesigned intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) target vehicle, showcasing new capabilities for missile defense testing. The launch utilized a second-stage engine from the retired Peacekeeper ICBM provided by the Space Force's Rocket Systems Launch Program.
The target met all performance objectives during the missile defense test, confirming its enhanced capabilities for future tests. Digital tools played a crucial role in the redesign, optimizing processes and improving operational safety, leading to a 25% reduction in field execution during Pathfinder operations prior to the inaugural launch.
The redesigned vehicle incorporates various digital technologies, including a digital twin and virtual reality pathfinders. Northrop Grumman has delivered 27 ICBM target vehicles and supported 12 successful launches since 2011. The new target uses a repurposed Peacekeeper SR119 solid rocket motor as its first stage, offering improved range, altitude, and payload capacity.
