Northrop Grumman Successfully Launches Redesigned ICBM Target Vehicle for Missile Defense Testing
Northrop Grumman has successfully launched its redesigned intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) target vehicle, meeting all performance objectives during the missile defense test. The new design incorporates advanced technologies, including a solid rocket motor and digital tools, to enhance efficiency and support the Missile Defense Agency's evaluation of defense systems. This launch is a significant advancement in the Pentagon's efforts to strengthen missile defense capabilities.

Northrop Grumman has successfully conducted the maiden flight of its redesigned intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) target vehicle, achieving all performance objectives during the missile defense test event. This redesign utilizes a Peacekeeper SR119 solid rocket motor and incorporates digital technologies, including a digital twin and augmented reality, to enhance manufacturing, testing, and operational efficiency.
The vehicle aims to support the Missile Defense Agency's evaluation of ballistic missile defense systems, such as Aegis and Ground-based Midcourse Defense. Since 2011, Northrop has delivered 27 target vehicles and conducted 12 launches. The successful launch marks a significant step in the Pentagon's efforts to bolster missile defense capabilities, particularly for future Next-Generation Interceptor testing.
