Norway Advances Nuclear Propulsion in Commercial Shipping
Norway is advancing nuclear propulsion initiatives with demonstration projects like a nuclear-powered LNG tanker and an offshore vessel. The focus has shifted from feasibility to implementation as regulatory, political, and economic barriers are addressed.
Norway is developing two nuclear-powered vessels: an LNG tanker supported by Knutsen OAS and an offshore ship with Island Offshore. These projects follow the completed NuProShip II initiative, which explored integrating small modular reactors (SMRs) into maritime applications, emphasizing the shift in focus from feasibility to practical implementation.
Key challenges now lie in regulatory frameworks, liability, and port access, as nuclear vessels operate at the intersection of maritime law and nuclear regulation. Technically viable designs include Generation IV reactors, with an emphasis on passive safety and advanced fuel types like TRISO. The upcoming International Conference on Nuclear Propulsion for Shipping in Ålesund will address these issues and pathways for deployment.
