Nouveau Monde Graphite Plans Major Mine and Plant in Quebec to Boost Canadian Self-Reliance

DEFENSESTRATEGIC MINERALS

Nouveau Monde Graphite aims to establish a mine and plant in Saints-Michel-des-Saints, Quebec, to produce critical minerals for battery manufacturing and defense. Recognized as a 'Major Project of National Interest' by Ottawa in November 2025, the project seeks to provide a stable supply of graphite, which is currently dominated by Asia.

The mine's financing is in progress, following setbacks caused by a slowdown in the EV battery market and U.S. tariffs. The Atikamekw First Nation signed an Impact Benefits Agreement with the company, addressing earlier opposition.

Mayor Mario Venne supports the project for its potential economic benefits, including job creation in a region facing population decline. The mine’s commercial production is targeted for 2028, with a test mine already operational.
