DEFENSE

The Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division (NSWC IHD) inaugurated the Garvin (Wayne) Thomas Plant Watch Lab on December 12, 2025, to bolster workforce training and process control capabilities amid rising demand for solid rocket motors and munitions. This lab supports the Energetics Manufacturing Department, offering a non-hazardous environment for training, troubleshooting, and system testing.

It replicates a functional production control system, allowing employees to engage in real-world scenarios without disrupting live operations. The lab also serves as a source for spare parts and features an operational Human Machine Interface (HMI) for multiple facilities.

Approximately 50 personnel will benefit from tailored training plans. Named after Garvin Wayne Thomas, a mechanical engineer, the facility embodies his vision of hands-on learning and practical training. Command officials stated that the lab is crucial for enhancing manufacturing readiness and addressing national defense needs.
