NTPC Limited is seeking sites in Andhra Pradesh for nuclear power plants as part of its goal to generate 30 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. The company has formed a joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to establish a nuclear plant in Rajasthan with a capacity of 4X700 MW.
NTPC favors locations in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat due to low seismic risk, availability of heavy water, and strong infrastructure. Other states considered for Processed Heavy Water Reactors include Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Bihar.
NPCIL currently operates 23 reactors producing 8 GW and aims to increase capacity to 22.5 GW by 2030. The Indian government targets 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047.
