Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation has released initial field study results for its hydroelectric project at the Kuugaaluk River, designated a 'nation-building' project by Prime Minister Mark Carney. Data collected in August and September 2025 covered aquatic life, archaeology, ground studies, and wildlife.
The studies focused on animal presence, Arctic Char movement, permafrost temperatures, and Inuit historical usage. The project will continue this summer with added geotechnical drilling. Concerns were raised by local MLA Johnny Mike regarding consultation with Panniqtuurmiut before the survey. Further consultations are planned for April in Pangnirtung.
