As the demand for electricity continues to escalate, the U.S. government is setting ambitious goals for nuclear energy, aiming to increase its nuclear power capacity from 100 gigawatts to 400 gigawatts by 2050. This transition is expected to play a crucial role in meeting energy needs, particularly as data centers driven by artificial intelligence also experience rapid growth. Amid this backdrop, Nuscale Power has emerged as a potential game-changer in the nuclear sector with its innovative small modular reactor (SMR) design, which has garnered approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Nuscale's technology stands out for its scalability, allowing multiple reactors to be connected to address varying project demands. Since receiving its first regulatory approval in 2020, the company has expanded its design portfolio, leading to a remarkable 300% surge in its stock price over the past year, elevating its market capitalization to over $10 billion. If successfully adopted, Nuscale could potentially sell dozens of reactors annually, translating to substantial revenue from both sales and maintenance contracts.

However, despite these promising prospects, the company's practical execution remains untested. Nuscale has yet to construct a functioning nuclear reactor, raising questions among investors about its project pipeline.

Currently, the company is exploring a partnership with Romanian utility Ropower, though the venture has yet to yield significant revenue or commitment. This uncertainty is compounded by the recent cancellation of a project in Utah, attributed to delays and cost overruns that rendered the initiative economically unviable.

While Nuscale Power's approved SMR design positions it at the forefront of the nuclear energy landscape, the absence of concrete projects and the setbacks faced thus far should serve as cautionary indicators. The company’s ability to navigate these challenges will be critical as it seeks to establish itself as a leader in a burgeoning field at a time when the appetite for reliable and sustainable energy sources is greater than ever.
