NW Natural Expansion Project Approved by Columbia County Board
The Columbia County Board has approved NW Natural's expansion of the Mist facility, aimed at enhancing natural gas storage capabilities. This decision supports regional energy reliability amid increasing demands and renewable energy integration.

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners approved the expansion of NW Natural's Mist-based facility, which includes the construction of 12 wells. Mist, Oregon's sole underground natural gas storage site, helps balance energy demands in the Pacific Northwest and has reportedly saved customers over $320 million in the past 20 years by utilizing low-price gas.
The project will add seven new injection and withdrawal wells to improve gas storage capacity, addressing challenges posed by reliance on a single interstate pipeline. Community leaders supported the project, emphasizing its economic benefits and historical collaboration with NW Natural. The expansion aims to enhance energy reliability as renewable energy sources increase.
