Omaha District Initiates $9.1 Million Butterfly Valve Rehabilitation at Fort Peck Dam

DEFENSE

The Omaha District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is rehabilitating two butterfly valves at Fort Peck Dam, a project initiated in 2018. The valves, installed in 1960, are essential for maintenance on turbines.

In-place refurbishment was chosen over replacement due to high costs and logistical challenges associated with removal. The $9.1 million contract was awarded at the end of 2023, with completion expected by spring 2026.

The project involves upgrading components and improving operational reliability, allowing for a fully sealed closure of water flow in under five minutes. Routine maintenance usually occurs from October to December, with construction scheduled to minimize impacts on power generation. The refurbishment aims for the valves to last at least another 65 years.
