Oneonta Committee Considers Activating Second Water Well to Address Water Loss
Oneonta's Quality of Life and Infrastructure Committee is examining the feasibility of activating a second water well at Catella Park to combat water loss. Director Chris Yacobucci indicated that the well exists but needs development. Currently, the city’s sole well pumps 680,000 gallons daily, but aging infrastructure causes significant water loss. Investing in the second well and upgrading the water treatment plant and mains could cost up to $180 million. The committee aims to include funding for these projects in the 2027 budget.

Oneonta's Quality of Life and Infrastructure Committee is considering commissioning a second water well at Catella Park to mitigate water loss. Director of Public Works Chris Yacobucci stated that while the well exists, it requires development.
The city's current well pumps 680,000 gallons per day but is hampered by a 66-mile water main that is approximately 100 years old, leading to substantial water loss. Upgrading the water treatment plant and mains could total $180 million. The committee plans to incorporate funding for these projects into the 2027 budget as a proactive measure to address increasing water demands.
