Oneonta Town Board Implements One-Year Moratorium on Data Centers
The Oneonta Town Board has enacted a one-year moratorium on new data center construction to evaluate local impacts. This decision follows community opposition to proposed data center developments, particularly from EcoYotta Inc.
On May 13, the Oneonta Town Board approved a one-year moratorium on data center construction to assess potential local impacts. This decision was influenced by community opposition during a public hearing, which allowed for further analysis of data center implications on neighborhood dynamics.
The moratorium will halt the processing of all related applications, including one from EcoYotta Inc. for a facility at 357 County Route 9. Board members discussed establishing a power consumption threshold to define micro-data centers, which would be exempt from the moratorium.
Town Supervisor Will Rivera indicated a minimum threshold of 2,000 kilowatt hours for such facilities. The local law will take effect immediately upon filing with the New York Department of State, reflecting the board's commitment to further research and policy analysis regarding data centers.
