Ontario Power Generation Advances Small Modular Reactor Project
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has reached a significant milestone in the Darlington New Nuclear Project, aiming for operational readiness of its first small modular reactor (SMR) by 2029. The project includes the construction of four BWRX-300 reactors, each with a capacity of approximately 300 MWe.

Ontario Power Generation has successfully lifted the Basemat module, weighing about 950 tons and measuring 37 meters in diameter, for its BWRX-300 reactor at the Darlington New Nuclear Project. This marks the first modular construction of a reactor foundation in Canada.
The project plans to install four BWRX-300 reactors, with the first expected to connect to the electrical grid in 2030. OPG submitted an application for an operating license to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission on March 30, 2026, following an investment decision made on May 8, 2025. The advancements may influence similar projects in Poland, where Orlen Synthos Green Energy utilizes the same reactor technology.
