OPAL Fuels Launches Renewable Natural Gas Facility in North Carolina
The OPAL Fuels facility near Roseboro converts landfill methane into renewable natural gas, potentially replacing 6.5 million gallons of diesel annually. This initiative aligns with North Carolina's energy strategy amid rising demand from population growth and industry.
The OPAL Fuels facility in Roseboro began operations in November 2024, converting methane from decomposing waste into renewable natural gas (RNG). It can produce enough RNG to replace approximately 6.5 million gallons of diesel fuel each year, sufficient to power around 650 garbage trucks or 350 long-haul trucks.
The project, with over $65 million invested, aims to mitigate methane emissions from landfills, which are significantly more harmful than carbon dioxide. Environmental concerns regarding methane leakage remain, despite the facility's monitoring systems. OPAL Fuels is also developing a $100 million RNG project near Charlotte Motor Speedway, set to begin next year.
